I’m Alex, the person behind Alexander James Projects.

My working life began in the motor trade, at a dealership where presentation, precision and attention to detail were everything. I was responsible for making sure the cars met those standards, and looking back, it shaped the way I’ve approached my work ever since.

At 23, I was made redundant when the owner retired and sold the business. I’d just bought my first house, which I’d decided to renovate from top to bottom. Suddenly, with no job and a house in pieces, I had to find a new direction.

So I got stuck in.

I learned by doing, often the hard way, alongside an experienced old-school builder called Dave, who taught me an enormous amount about the building trades. Decorating, carpentry, plastering, general building work. I gradually developed the confidence and ability to take on more.

A local businessman who’d seen the transformation of my own home asked me to renovate a derelict bungalow he’d bought. That led to further projects, work for an estate agency and eventually a substantial decorating contract at Kempton Park Racecourse.

The real turning point came through a good friend, Jon, an exceptionally talented kitchen fitter. He introduced me to Raycross Interiors, a high-end kitchen company. What began as decorating work soon grew into something much bigger. When other trades weren’t available or projects ran into difficulties, I stepped in and took responsibility for getting things done.

That became a trusted working relationship lasting around ten years, with my team taking care of the preparation, building work and finishing across their installations. The reputation opened further doors, including projects associated with Neptune, the luxury kitchen and interiors brand.

I was coordinating projects, solving problems, managing the details and making life easier for everyone involved, particularly the customer. And increasingly, those customers asked me to create their bathrooms too.

That’s where everything came together.

The practical skills, the eye for detail, the understanding of materials, the importance of good design and, above all, the responsibility of seeing a project through properly.

By the time I moved to Devon, I’d built a thriving business with a small, trusted team. Relocating meant leaving those relationships behind and starting again, but it also gave me the chance to concentrate on the work I enjoy most, creating beautiful, individual bathrooms and working directly with the people who will enjoy them.

Today, I help my customers with everything, from the initial ideas and product choices to the final installation. Some people have a very clear vision. Others prefer me to guide them, and occasionally trust me to make many of the decisions on their behalf.

That trust is something I’ve spent my entire career earning.
